The tour of the Upper Midwest continues for the No. 6-seed West Texas A&M football team as it travels to No. 4-seed Grand Valley State in a NCAA quarterfinal game Saturday at 12 p.m. CT at Arend D. Lubbers Stadium in Allendale, Mich. Both teams are 11-2 on the year and won road games last weekend in come-from-behind fashion over the top two seeds in Super Region Four.
GVSU upset top-seeded Colorado State-Pueblo Saturday, 34-30, and the Buffs downed No. 2-seed Ohio Dominican, 34-27. Super Region Four is the only Division II Region with none of the top three seeds remaining.
This is WT’s second consecutive trip to the NCAA quarterfinals as the Buffs won 33-28 at Ashland University (Ohio) last season in the second round to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in school history. WT then downed No. 1-seed and top-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo 34-13 to advance its first NCAA semifinals in 2012.
The Lakers are one of the most successful Division II schools in recent history in football. They have won four national championships since 2001 and appeared in six championship games since 2001. This season, GVSU is 11-2 on the year and went 7-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. GVSU is 19-2 at home in the playoffs and 30-11 all-time. This edition of the Lakers has come on as of late as they have won seven straight games following two early season losses at Ohio Dominican and at Ferris State. Leading the way for the Lakers this season is a very balanced offensive attack led by quarterback Heath Parling who averages 247.9 yards per game. His top target is Brandan Green who has 1,081 yards on 45 catches as he ranks 22nd nationally in receiving yards. On the ground, backup running back Chris Robinson has filled in nicely for injured starter Michael Ratay. Ratay had 1,012 yards and 16 touchdowns before being lost for the season with a knee injury versus Hillsdale last month. Robinson has 155 carries for 779 yards and six scores. Defensively the Lakers are led by Jordan Kaufman with 100 tackles and 43 solo stops. Matt Mosley leads the team with 12 tackles for loss and is second in sacks with five. De’Ondre Hogan has a team-high 7.5 sacks. Reggie Williams and Erik Thompson each have four interceptions on the year.
Radio coverage of the game can be heard throughout the Texas Panhandle on KGNC 710 AM with Neil Horn and Brice Sheets. The Buffalo Football Pregame Show begins at 11:05 a.m. Saturday.
